Craig Hanaumi Service Award

Sgt. Buck

2023 Award Recipient, Sergeant BJ Buck

Annually since 2015, the Bellevue Police Foundation Board of Directors honors a Bellevue police officer who has demonstrated a pattern of professional achievement, personal commitment, strong community service and contribution to public safety.

Formerly known as the Platinum Service Award, the award was renamed the Craig Hanaumi Service Award in 2019 in recognition of the high standard of service Officer Craig Hanaumi sets every day.

Sgt. Buck is a supervisor in our Special Operations Group (SOG). He directly supervises numerous detectives who actively investigates, locates and arrests some of the most prolific criminals that target Bellevue. This is a high liability position which requires someone with great knowledge of the law and tactical expertise to ensure that not only are we on firm legal ground in our actions but also someone who is methodical in making sure we are conducting operations is a safe and systematic manner. SOG is Bellevue PD's most effective crime reducing unit due in large part to Sgt. Buck's supervision.

Besides his excellent work in SOG, Sgt. Buck is also a member of the Bellevue PD Bomb Squad. The bomb squad is a regional asset that is designed to protect our community from explosive/biological/nuclear devices located in all types of environments or settings. Sgt. Buck efforts along with his colleagues contribute to the overall safety of the Puget Sound area. His commitment to this team, requires hundreds of hours of training and education to safeguard our community.

Sgt. Buck also showed his personal commitment to the honorable career of law enforcement by being a supervisor of our regionally recognized Honor Guard Team and by volunteering for the Behind the Badge Foundation.

Whether it be honoring a fallen law enforcement officer from another police department or our own recent tragedy with losing one of own officers, Sgt. Buck works tirelessly to honor our fallen co-workers and highlight the risks and sacrifices that policemen and policewomen make every day they put on their uniform. In his capacity with Behind the Badge, Sgt. Buck not only highlights and honors fallen heroes but also, and maybe even more importantly, supports the fallen officer's family.

Sgt. Buck truly excels in professional achievement, personal commitment, strong community service and in his contributions to public safety.
